Your LTC Instructor, Mark

Why do I teach the Texas LTC class?  There are a number of reasons.  The primary reason is that I think everyone has the right to defend themselves against being a victim of violent crime.  Statistically, the chances of becoming a victim of a violent crime are small.  The odds vary depending on where you are.  On the other hand, being rare means that it still happens. And I’d prefer people be prepared rather than be victimized.

Secondly, I’ve spent many years instructing in a corporate environment. While I think there are a number of people with shooting skills and knowledge of Texas laws pertaining to the use of force, there are fewer that combine that knowledge with the ability to convey that information in a manner that is easy to relate to and understand.  I want you to understand the laws, the factors in use of force decisions, and the consequences of your actions.  You need to be well informed to help you make appropriate and responsible choices.  There is a lot more to learn than just getting a permit and then carrying a pistol.  I want you to have the knowledge, mindset, and skills to be a safe and responsible concealed carrier.

I view Texas LTC instruction as a key first step in firearm defensive training.  Learning the basics of the laws, firearm safety, and basic marksmanship skills are an important first step.  I realize that many people who get their LTC are attending the only formal firearm related training they may acquire.  While I’d like for everyone to continue on to more real-world defensive firearm training, the reality is that most do not.  So, I want to impart as much knowledge, safety and skill that can be learned in the class time mandated by Texas laws.

Texas DPS tells instructors what topics to cover, but instructors have flexibility in exactly what we teach, and how much time we spend on these topics.  Not all LTC classes are alike.  You can certainly hear very different messages depending on who provides the instruction.  I’d like to think that my classes are not intimidating, welcoming to experienced and new shooters alike, and hopefully leave students with an understanding of the benefits, responsibilities, and considerations that come up as part of being a lawful, safe, licensed concealed carry.

I limit class sizes.  This enables us to have more discussion, group interaction and individual attention to answer your questions in the classroom and on the range.  I feel that you will learn a lot more from a small group than you will as an anonymous attendee in a large lecture hall format LTC class.  I focus on quality over quantity.   I firmly believe that you will come away with a better understanding and retention of the material.
